Applesauce

Author: Bobby Parrish • Oct 01, 2025

Smooth and tangy homemade applesauce made with just a few ingredients and sweetened with a touch of coconut sugar.

This recipe is ,  with main ingredient

Rose and I made this homemade applesauce recipe the other day and it was better than anything I have ever bought from the store. The texture was smooth, the sweetness was perfect, and Rose gobbled it up!

This applesauce recipe could not be easier, you just need 1.5 hours to bake it in the oven and you are set. Plus the house will smell amazing.

If you have some leftover apples, you can make Dessi's apple coffee cake recipe with caramel sauce.

How To Make Applesauce

I have found the best way to make homemade applesauce is in the oven. If you have a enameled dutch oven, like a le creuset, that's perfect.

Add the peeled and quartered apples to the dutch oven. I used mostly honeycrisp apples and a few granny smith because they have a nice tangy flavor.

Add the butter, cinnamon, coconut sugar, lemon and orange juice, and salt. Mix well, pop the lid on the pot, and bake at 350F for 1.5 hours.

The apples begin to break down and more importantly, they release pectin. The pectin will help thicken the applesauce once it cools.

Once ready, stir well with a wooden spoon and the apples will just fall apart and the texture will get smooth. Once cooled, store in fridge for 5 days or freeze for 3 months.

What Apples Are Best For Homemade Applesauce?

You want to use a combination of sweet and tart apples for homemade applesauce. I used 2.5 pounds organic honeycrisp and half a pound of organic granny smith. Remember that aples are on the dirty dozen, so try to buy organic if possible.

  1. Preheat oven to 350F. Peel, core, and cut the apples in quarters and place in a large baking dish dutch oven. Make sure the dutch oven is not exposed cast iron, this will react with the apples.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients to the baking dish or dutch oven along with ¼ teaspoon of salt. Mix well, cover the baking dish tightly with tin foil, or cover the dutch oven with the lid, and bake in oven for 1.5 hours. Stir the apples after 1 hour.
  3. When ready, stir the apples using a wood spoon and they will break up and turn into smooth sauce. Once cooled, store in fridge for 5 days or freeze.
